Java Fern are a easy to grow live aquarium plants known for their hardy nature. These slow growing plants have what is called a rhizome meaning you want to attach the plant to something rather than bury it. It is best practice to attach the rhizome to a surface with thread or superglue rather than planting. Java fern plants are one of few plants that can be kept with more destructive fish like cichlids and goldfish due to their tough nature and thick leaves. Low to medium light is optimal for Java fern, when the lighting is too strong it can sometimes cause algae to grow on the leaves. Java Ferns are very easy to grow and do best attached to something. Java ferns can be propagated by cutting the rhizome and reattaching the cutting elsewhere. The leaves on the java ferns will also grow little dots on the underside that can sometimes look like bugs but they are actually seeds! These little dots will produce new baby java ferns that grow off of the leaves and can be plucked off and planted or left to grow larger and then plucked off later.
