The Blue Brazos Dwarf Crayfish (Cambarellus texacus var. "Blue") is a miniature freshwater crayfish that features a striking bright blue color! Dwarf crayfish are also known as mini lobsters, although true lobsters do not exist in freshwater. These crayfish are similar to Orange CPO Crayfish in appearance and behavior, aside from the obvious difference in color. When kept in a pH consistently at or under 6.8, this crayfish will retain its blue color throughout adulthood. If the pH is higher, it may revert back to a brown color after molting, so keeping your water at a lower pH than 6.8 is ideal. Dwarf crayfish are an excellent choice for the nano aquarium, or for any small aquarium on a stand or other surface. They are larger than dwarf shrimp (they can grow up to 1.6 inches long) and tend to live much longer, but are still small enough to live in a tank as small as 5 gallons. They are active and do not typically hide during the day like most larger crayfish, but they appreciate items that provides cover, such as a decorative cave or building decorations. Though this crayfish is small enough not to be a threat to most other tank inhabitants, they have occasionally gone after dwarf shrimp (e.g. Sky Blue Shrimp). Dwarf crayfish can be aggressive or territorial with their own kind. Most cichlids are aggressive toward crayfish, and most bottom-dwelling species should also be avoided. They generally can be kept with snails, such as Nerite Snails, Mystery Snails, and Sulawesi Snails, as well as some species of fast moving fish, such as Mollies, Platies, Scarlet Badis, Dwarf Plecos, and Dwarf Gourami.
